SOMATIC PRACTICE WITH EYE AND TONGUE MOVEMENT
You can practice this session lying in a comfortable Savasana position on your back (perhaps with a bolster under your knees), or seated.
The intention of this practice is to use simple yet powerful tools to refine and clarify sensory input. We will explore eye movements and tongue movements, alongside proprioception (our sense of where we are in space) and interoception (our ability to sense the internal state of the body).
The information that comes in through our senses - both outer and inner - plays an important role in how the nervous system assesses safety and responds to the world around us. This, in turn, can influence protective responses such as muscle tension, guarding, and even the experience of pain.
Our eyes are essential for guiding movement and helping us orient ourselves in space. When vision narrows or the muscles around the eyes remain chronically tense, the nervous system may interpret this as a signal that increased vigilance is needed.
The tongue has connections to several cranial nerves and influences functions such as breathing, swallowing, speech, and regulation of the autonomic nervous system. Through fascial connection, the tongue is also connected to structures throughout the neck, jaw all the way to the pelvic floor.
Throughout this practice, we will use these subtle explorations as a way to improve body awareness, invite a greater sense of ease, and support communication between the brain and the body.
After all, our experience of the world emerges from the inseparable relationship between the two.
